Frankfurt Airport Ranked First in Connecting 330 Destinations
Frankfurt airport, German flag carrier Lufthansa’s main hub in Germany, has been ranked number one by providing connections to 330 destinations.
Frankfurt was followed by IGA Istanbul Airport, by providing transportation to 309 destinations, and Paris Charles de Gaulle was ranked third in the world for serving 282 destinations, according to fresh data from Cirium, the world’s most trusted source of aviation analytics.
However, Istanbul airport has been ranked first with 309 nonstop destinations and the city’s east-meets-west location also makes it a popular destination for other operators beyond the Turkish Airlines network.
Istanbul Airport can handle 90 million passengers a year in the current phase, which, while a high figure, is nothing compared to its potential capacity to serve 200 million after the completion of all phases, making it the world’s largest.
All four phases of the airport’s construction and expansion, including six runways, are expected to be completed by 2028.Amsterdam Schiphol and Chicago O’Hare airports, the top US gateway, shared fourth place in the list with 270 destinations apiece. The only other European airport in the top 10 was Rome Fiumicino (234 routes).
No UK Airports
None of the UK airports found a place among top 10 with London Heathrow dropping from eighth position in 2023 to 12th this year with 221 destinations. This placed it only just ahead of another London airport Gatwick which served 218 destinations. Madrid, Munich and Barcelona airports also featured in the list.
Cirium’s research shows that 10 of the top 20 most connected airports were in Europe with four each in China and the US. In the Middle East, Dubai was ranked sixth with 269 destinations and Jeddah airport in Saudi Arabia took the 13th place (219 destinations) just behind London Heathrow airport.
Dallas Fort Worth was ranked seventh (261), Shanghai eighth (243), Atlanta ninth (237), Rome Fiumicino tenth (234), and Denver 11th (229), in the list.
Gatwick airport in the UK was in 15th place with direct flights to 218 destinations, the same as Madrid Barajas. Istanbul Ataturk Airport is the larger of two international airports in Istanbul and the hub of Turkish Airlines.
