Sharjah Strengthens Position as a Regional Aviation Hub as Airport Expansion and Air Arabia Network Growth Accelerate
Sharjah is reinforcing its position as one of the Middle East’s fastest-growing aviation and logistics centres as passenger traffic reaches record levels, airport expansion projects advance, and international connectivity continues to expand across the emirate. Home to the UAE’s first low-cost carrier, Air Arabia, and one of the region’s leading cargo airports, Sharjah has become an increasingly important gateway connecting the Middle East with Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Indian subcontinent. Industry analysts say the emirate is benefiting from strong travel demand, tourism growth, and rising cargo volumes across regional markets.
Recent figures released by Sharjah Airport Authority highlight the scale of this growth. Sharjah International Airport welcomed more than 19.4 million passengers in 2025, representing annual growth of 13.9% and setting a new record for the airport. Aircraft movements rose to more than 116,000 flights while cargo volumes also continued expanding.
The airport is simultaneously progressing through one of the largest infrastructure programmes in its history. Sharjah Airport’s expansion project aims to increase annual passenger handling capacity to 25 million passengers by 2027, supported by terminal upgrades, expanded facilities, and improved passenger processing systems.
A major component of the programme is the expansion of the passenger terminal alongside upgrades to central utility and operational infrastructure. Airport officials say the wider development plan consists of multiple project packages designed to improve efficiency, increase capacity, and enhance the passenger experience.
Cargo operations are emerging as another important growth driver for Sharjah’s aviation ecosystem. Earlier this year, Sharjah Airport Authority showcased its cargo expansion strategy at Air Cargo India 2026, highlighting investments in integrated logistics infrastructure, smart cargo technologies, and sea-air freight solutions aimed at strengthening the emirate’s position within global supply chains.
Industry observers note that Sharjah occupies a unique position within the Gulf aviation landscape. Unlike Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which focus heavily on premium long-haul transit traffic, Sharjah has successfully developed a model centred around low-cost aviation, regional connectivity, and cargo logistics.
At the centre of this strategy is Air Arabia, which continues expanding its international route network from Sharjah. During 2025 and early 2026, the airline launched several new destinations including Munich, Prague, Vienna, Krabi, Addis Ababa, Sochi, and London, significantly strengthening the airport’s international footprint.
The airport’s network now connects passengers to more than 100 global destinations, supported by the addition of new airline partners and increased frequencies across existing routes. Four new international airlines joined Sharjah Airport’s network during 2025 alone, further reinforcing the emirate’s role as a regional aviation gateway.
Technology is simultaneously reshaping airport operations. Sharjah Airport has introduced new digital services aimed at reducing processing times and improving passenger convenience, including home check-in solutions that allow travellers to complete procedures before arriving at the airport.
