A self-service repair program might be launched soon!

Apple recently revealed that customers who’ve been confident in their ability to complete their repairs will have access to Apple’s genuine parts and tools.

After reviewing the devices, Apple will release repair manuals soon. At first, Apple will sell more than 200 different parts or tools for repairing its iPhone 12 and 13 models, and then the program will expand to include Mac computers with M1 processors.

According to Apple, Self Service Repair is intended for individual technicians who have the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. Going to a certified professional repair shop, on the other hand, is a better option for the vast majority of customers.

Apple intends to launch the program in the United States in early 2022. For the right-to-repair movement, it will be a significant step forward. Apple has long been chastised by right-to-repair advocates, who believe that individuals and small businesses should be able to repair their own devices.

In recent years, the right-to-repair movement has gained a lot of traction, with several US states considering “fair repair” legislation.

Apple previously claimed that consumers fixing their stuff would be dangerous, according to iFixit, an independent repair-instructions website, but with renewed governmental interest in repair markets and notably bad press, it appears that this no longer concerns them.

“It may be a small step overall – but for Apple to do it, this is a massive win for the right-to-repair movement,” wrote Canadian computer hardware reviewers Hardware Canucks.

Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple, came out in support of the movement earlier this year.
