Abu Dhabi issues Ramadan tent guidelines; sports council signs heritage partnership through 2026

In the last week of March, the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport issued guidelines for obtaining permits to set up Ramadan tents across the emirate, as preparations for the holy month gathered pace, while a separate agreement highlighted ongoing efforts to promote heritage sports in the capital.

The permits allow businesses and residents to obtain approval to install temporary tents for iftar during Ramadan. Authorities said the service is free of cost and requires no additional documentation. The process includes logging in with a digital ID, submitting the application, and receiving permission to proceed.

The department outlined specific conditions for setting up the tents. Only one tent is allowed outside a plot’s boundaries, with the area not exceeding 60 square metres and a maximum height of 5 metres.

Materials such as wool, tarpaulins and traditional Bedouin fabrics may be used. The tent must be installed in front of the plot owner’s residence, between the plot and the sidewalk, without obstructing traffic, pedestrian movement or public services.

Authorities stressed that permit holders will be responsible for any damage caused to public or private property during installation or removal. Setting up a tent in an unapproved area will be considered a violation and may result in legal action. The department also retains the authority to order the immediate removal of tents in cases of emergency, complaints or breaches of permit conditions.

Meanwhile, in a move aimed at strengthening cultural and sporting initiatives, the Abu Dhabi Sports Council signed a sponsorship agreement with Serh Group to support heritage sports events through 2026.

Under the agreement, Serh Group will act as a strategic sponsor for several events listed on the council’s 2026 calendar. The collaboration reflects the council’s commitment to expanding partnerships with national institutions and ensuring the sustainability of sporting and cultural events that reflect the UAE’s identity.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Aref Ahmed Al Awani, General Secretary of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, along with board members of Serh Group and officials from both sides.

Officials said the partnership aligns with broader efforts to strengthen engagement with the private sector, enhance the organisation and promotion of heritage sports, and increase their visibility across communities and media platforms, particularly in the Al Dhafra region and across Abu Dhabi.

The collaboration forms part of a wider strategy to support and sustain heritage sports while boosting their community and media impact through integrated organisational, marketing and promotional initiatives.
