AD Ports Group Achieves 2pc Reduction in GHG Emissions

Showcasing the substantial progress made in its decarbonisation efforts, AD Ports Group on Thursday said that the company has reduced the environmental intensity of container port operations through enhanced efficiency, energy savings, and decarbonisation initiatives.

AD Port Group’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity, measured by kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per TEU, dropped by 2%, from 11.93 kgCO2e per TEU in 2022 to 11.67 kgCO2e per TEU in 2023.

Solar PV installations played a crucial role in reducing 5,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions. Future solar PV projects are planned at Khalifa Port, Zayed Port, AD Ports Group’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, and at a multi-purpose port in Safaga, Egypt, managed under a concession for Egypt’s Red Sea Ports Authority.

Disclosing the achievements in its Sustainability Report for 2023, AD Ports Group said that these reductions were driven by greater operational efficiency, energy savings at terminals, and increased use of electricity from solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.

The report also noted a 7% decrease in electricity consumption intensity and a 174% increase in solid waste recycling, AD Ports Group said in a regulatory filing with Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) this morning.

The report underscored AD Ports Group’s commitment to transparency and sharing its performance with stakeholders. The Group’s initiatives align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and support the sustainability objectives set by Abu Dhabi and the UAE, highlighting its key role in the maritime, industrial, and logistics sectors.

Significant Strides

Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, AD Ports Group Managing Director and CEO, said that in their determined effort to foster equitable growth and inspired by the UAE’s leadership’s wise vision, the company has taken significant strides in diversifying the Emirates’ economy, while adhering to sustainability commitments.

“AD Ports Group has achieved significant progress in advancing its sustainability agenda. As we navigate an ever-evolving global landscape, our commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance principles remains at the core of our strategy,” he said.

The report delved into AD Ports Group’s sustainability journey, highlighting partnerships and collaborations aimed at shaping a more sustainable and resilient future. It emphasises the Group’s significant contributions to environmental, social, and economic impacts (ESG).

The key achievements from the report include the successful launch of 124 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, an 84% employee satisfaction rate, a 57% rise in total employee training hours, and a 42% increase in female workforce representation.

Additionally, the Group received several prestigious awards for its ESG efforts, including recognition from the United Nations, the Harvard Business Council, and others.

Captain Saif Al Mheiri, Abu Dhabi Maritime CEO and Acting Chief Sustainability Officer at AD Ports Group said: “I salute our teams for their hard work and commitment to advancing the company’s sustainability goals; their efforts are clearly reflected in the positive results of our 2023 Sustainability Report. As we continue to grow and expand, AD Ports Group’s experience shows that it is possible to grow sustainably, advancing business and societal goals.”
