Facebook is working on creating a metaverse, or virtual online environment, where people can meet up as digital reflections of themselves using virtual reality headsets. To develop this, Facebook plans to hire 10,000 people in the European Union. Horizon Worlds, a game based on the same concept, is also being developed by the company.
Ceo Mark Zuckerberg has talked up this idea since July. Facebook said metaverse has the potential to help unlock access to new creative, social, and economic opportunities. The new jobs being created over the will include highly specialized engineers.
Investing in the EU offered many advantages, including access to a large consumer market, first-class universities, and high-quality talent.
This project is currently Facebook’s top priority. In the midst of all the damaging allegations and scandals, they announced the metaverse. Many experts believe that this project is being announced in order to restore the company’s reputation, which has been tarnished as a result of the allegations, which include whistle-blower Frances Haugen, a former product manager on Facebook’s civic integrity team, who revealed that Facebook is harmful to teenagers’ mental health.
Facebook has a history of buying rival companies, but the company now claims that building the metaverse will take 10 to 15 years. They promised to work with other businesses. It recently invested $50 million (£36.3 million) in non-profit organizations to help “responsibly build the metaverse.”
