L&T Finalise Orders for 2 GW Solar PV Plants in Middle East

The renewables arm of the India-based Larsen & Toubro (L&T) on Monday said that it has finalised mega orders with a leading developer in the Middle East to build two Gigawatt Solar PV plants.

The plants will have a cumulative capacity of 3.5 GW. Though the company did not disclose financial details, it expected to be between $120 Million to $300 million.

The scope of the orders also includes grid interconnections encompassing pooling substations and overhead transmission lines. Detailed engineering and initial construction work are expected to commence shortly.

Last month, L&T announced having won a solar-cum-storage plant order in India. Now, with the fresh mega orders from the Middle East, L&T’s renewables portfolio is poised to reach 22 GWp (Gigawatt Peak) cumulative capacity, comprising solar and wind generation projects already commissioned and those in the making, the company said in a regulatory filing with Mumbai Stock Exchange.

L&T is a multinational company engaged in EPC projects, hi-tech manufacturing and services. It operates in over 50 countries worldwide.

T Madhava Das, Whole-time Director & Sr Executive Vice President (Utilities) – L&T, said that the successive order wins stand testimony to our proven engineering and project management capabilities to meet the requirements in terms of plant performance, workforce mobilisation, safety, quality and timeline. We cherish this level of customer trust, he said.

Expanding L&T’s Green Portfolio

Commenting on the mega orders, Mr S N Subrahmanyan, Chairman & Managing Director – L&T, said: “The Middle East is far ahead in creating sustainable energy infrastructure and in providing a smart lifestyle. These orders are welcome additions to our green portfolio, as we build the company of the future with next-generation technologies.”

In January this year, the company said that it’s power transmission & distribution business has been chosen as the turnkey Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractor to establish a 1800 MWac Solar Photovoltaic Plant in Dubai.

The project is the sixth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and it will reduce around 2.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Spread over 20 sq km, the project will become operational in three phases. In addition to the Photovoltaic plant, the scope includes related evacuation and interconnection arrangements including two Gas Insulated Substations, high voltage underground cabling and medium voltage distribution networks.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is the largest single-site solar park in the world based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. It has a planned production capacity of 5,000 MW by 2030 and when completed, it will save over 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

The Solar Park is a crucial component in both the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and DEWA’s strategic initiative for Net Zero emissions by 2050.
