Statement by IMF Deputy Managing Director Kenji Okumura at the Conclusion of His Visit to Thailand

Bangkok, Thailand – June 5, 2026: Mr. Kenji Okamura, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), issued the following statement today in Bangkok at the end of his visit to Thailand:

“I am delighted to be in Thailand. I would like to extend my gratitude to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Bank of Thailand Governor Mr. Vitai Ratanakorn, and other senior officials for their warm hospitality and the highly informative discussions during my visit.

“Thailand’s economy has remained resilient in the face of repeated shocks—including sharply higher energy prices stemming from the war in the Middle East and elevated trade policy uncertainty—supported by strong institutions and policy responses.

“In this context, we discussed how policies can help cushion the impact of these shocks while preserving macroeconomic stability.

“Looking ahead, the authorities’ efforts to advance structural reforms will raise Thailand’s medium-term growth and further strengthen its economic resilience.

“Thailand will host the 2026 Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank Group from October 12 to 18, marking its second time hosting the Meetings since 1991. I conveyed my deep appreciation for the strong partnership with the Thai authorities in the preparations. The Meetings will bring together our global membership in a dynamic region to discuss pragmatic solutions to shared challenges.

“Finally, I reiterated the IMF’s unwavering commitment to supporting Thailand through policy dialogue, advice and capacity development. I also expressed our sincere appreciation for the Thailand authorities’ generous hosting of the IMF’s Capacity Development Office of Thailand (CDOT), which provides extensive capacity development support in the region, funded by the Government of Japan. We look forward to continuing our productive partnership with Thailand in the years ahead.”
