The first-generation iPod was introduced by Apple on October 23, 2001, twenty years ago (M8541). The company’s slogan was “1,000 songs in your pocket.” It was released approximately 8+12 months after the Macintosh version of iTunes.
Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPod at a small and insignificant press conference in the Town Hall auditorium at Apple’s former Infinite Loop headquarters. He revealed the device by taking it from his pocket.
According to the press release, Jobs stated that with the iPod, Apple has invented a whole new category of digital music player that allows us to put our entire music collection in our pocket and listen to it wherever the user goes. “With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again,” he said.
With the introduction of the iPad, Apple changed the world forever, ushering in the technological revolution of the last two decades. It introduced listeners to the “shuffle” mode, which plays songs in random order.
It also lets us download an entire CD into iPod in less than 10 seconds, and 1000 songs in less than 10 minutes 30 times faster than USB-based players.
In these 20 years, many versions of the iPod were launched. As of May 28, 2019, only the iPod Touch (7th generation) is still in production. iPod changed the way we listen to music and helped grow Apple into one of the biggest companies in the world with more than 400 million units sold there is no doubt it was a success.
