The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has introduced a new Efficient Appliance Procurement Policy for government entities as part of its updated Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030. The initiative aims to significantly reduce electricity and water consumption across government operations while reinforcing the emirate’s commitment to sustainable development.
The updated strategy targets a 22 per cent reduction in electricity consumption—equivalent to 19 terawatt-hours (TWh)—and a 32 per cent reduction in water consumption, or 465 million cubic metres (m³), by 2030 compared to a 2013 business-as-usual baseline.
The newly announced procurement policy will require government entities in Abu Dhabi to prioritise the purchase of high-efficiency appliances designed to reduce energy and water consumption. The move is expected to accelerate the adoption of sustainable technologies across public sector operations and strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader in sustainable government procurement.
Depending on appliance stock turnover and adoption rates, the policy is projected to deliver estimated annual savings of 8.2 gigawatt-hours of electricity and 120,000 cubic metres of water by 2030.
“The Efficient Appliance Procurement Policy for government entities reinforces Abu Dhabi’s commitment to energy and water efficiency,” said Ahmed Mohammad Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary at the Department of Energy. “We are integrating sustainability into government operations and creating long-term economic and environmental value for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi by ensuring that equipment purchased by government organisations meets strict efficiency standards.”
Government entities are expected to benefit from reduced operational expenses and improved building efficiency as a result of the policy’s implementation. In addition, the strategy is designed to send clear market signals that encourage investment in advanced, energy-efficient technologies and foster the development of innovative solutions.
The policy aligns with the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy and the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative, further strengthening the emirate’s position as a global leader in resource efficiency and sustainable energy policy.
